BRT International

Even a brief survey of planned or existing BRT lines around the world reveals that in virtually every corner of the globe, cities are increasingly looking to Bus Rapid Transit as a viable transit solution.

Ottawa Transitway – Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

One of the largest BRT systems in America is the Ottawa Transitway, which handles 200,000 daily riders with peak capacities of 10,000 pph.  The system is currently at its peak capacity but LRT conversion planning has proven tremendously difficult because of the system’s design.

By some reports, the cost savings of the BRT system in Ottawa were less than expected, and were ultimately just slightly less than the cost to build Calgary’s C-train, an LRT system.  Much of the expense in Ottawa was due to the fact that the system was cut into rock 9 meters below grade, with stations also below grade.  BRT stations also did not realize anticipated cost savings because they required additional passing lanes to accommodate the large number of buses and overhead walkways for passenger safety.
