Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the project needed?

Hennepin County is planning to reconstruct County Road 81 to improve safety and intersection capacity in the corridor, and to replace the pavement, which has reached the end of its service life. It will also add curbs, gutters and storm sewers, an integrated, computerized traffic signal system, and double left turn lanes at some key intersections.

By 2030, we expect the metropolitan region to grow by more than 900,000 people. The northwest metro population will jump from 640,000 to more than 880,000 people, a growth of about 240,000 people.

Growth will bring opportunities for residential and business development. That will result in more consumer choice and a broader tax base, but it also will add more traffic congestion.

Now is the perfect opportunity to incorporate road reconstruction with new bus service. Building more and wider roads is an expensive way to accommodate growth. Instead, a balanced approach that Includes both road and transit improvements will move people more efficiently.
