Frequently Asked Questions

Why build the separated bus lanes in the middle of the road?

Between Bass Lake Road and 85th Avenue North, bus-only lanes could be added in the center of County Road 81. Placing bus lanes in the center will provide:

- Fast, comfortable and predictable bus service
- Operational advantages including minimizing bus-vehicle conflicts
- Smooth transition to and from mixed traffic
- A Ïsafe havenÓ for pedestrians crossing the road to and from bus stations
- Equal development opportunities on either side of the road

Safe access to the median stations will be ensured through careful planning of intersections and signal timing.

Hennepin County is also studying the feasibility of building the busway along the BNSF railroad tracks that run alongside the roadway. The roadway alignment would eliminate the need to locate the busway in the center median.
